We have nothing to fear, for we are living it

It happened. Against all odds, conventional insight, and sense of decency, Donald Trump has become President-Elect of the United States. On January 20, 2017, he will be sworn in, in front of President Barack Obama (a man whom he actively sought to delegitimize and indignate) at the U.S. Capitol building, taking the Oath of Office to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States of America. There’s one big problem: most Americans didn’t vote for him.

In August 2015, I had predicted that Trump would win the Republican Party’s nomination. Later in the Spring, I predicted he would win the presidency. Like millions of Americans, I watched in horror as he climbed his way to victory on election night. I am deeply  devastated, angered, and disoriented – as is the world.

And, that’s good news. Everything that I had feared would happen on election night had actually happened. Trump won, Republicans have control of both Houses of Congress, and at least two new conservative justices will be nominated to the Supreme Court in the next four years. Everything I had feared: the corruption of a progressive America.

But, now, we know what we’re up against. Racism is real. Sexism is real. Homophobia is real. Xenophobia is real. White supremacy is real. Corruption is real. And, it will be in the White House.

There will be no president like Donald Trump. That much is clear. To imagine him alongside Washington, Lincoln, the Roosevelts, Kennedy, and especially Obama, is unconscionable. But, it will happen. For those who stand for equality for all before the law, sustainable socio-economic policies, global partnerships, and human dignity; our worst fears have come alive.

So, we have nothing left to fear, for it has come into our immediate view, present. We are fearless.

As President Franklin D. Roosevelt had said, “We have nothing to fear, but Fear itself.” Fearlessness is the most powerful force we are capable of. It is what drives love, laughter, creativity, and evolution. We must harness this power to the benefit of our collective welfare. We must challenge those who deny it. Now is the time to move away from touch-screens and remote controls. Now, we must march upon the marble of our local and national capitals to refute the perversion of America that is about to be cast. We are the final obstruction to the villainy and destruction that a Trump administration promises. We the People must defend the Constitution, for it is for us not them.

We live in dangerous, uncertain, and unconventional times. We must reject political convenience and embrace an uncompromising compassion and commitment to the America that was invalidated on Tuesday night. We may lose one election in one year, but we must not lose this country forever. He is there because they fear our justice. Let us rise to the occasion and show that the awesome power of equality, love, and civility cannot be Trumped.
